How to Decorate Around a Large Leather Sofa

How to Decorate Around a Large Leather Sofa

A large leather sofa commands attention in a den, family or living room and influences how you should decorate the space. When selecting the room's other furnishings, consider the sofa size, as well as its color and style. Add tables, lamps, accessories and additional seating in sizes, finishes and textures that complement your leather sofa for a cohesive, balanced space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Place end tables next to the sofa that reach the arm height of the sofa or higher. This will prevent the couch from dwarfing them. Use narrow tables alongside both arms or only one end table of moderate width if space is an issue. Add a coffee or cocktail table that reaches near the height of the seat. Tuck a sofa table or console behind the sofa if possible.

    2

Use a matching or coordinating loveseat for additional seating if space allows. Or, use one or two chairs with seats that are near the height of the sofa seat. Place an ottoman with a chair or in front of a window for extra seating if necessary. Select fabrics for seating in patterns that contain the color or colors found in the leather.

    3

Add comfort and visual interest to the sofa with throw pillows in fabrics that repeat the patterns or colors found in the rest of the seating. Use pillows with fabrics that have texture to prevent them from easily sliding off the leather. Large-sized throw pillows, or average-sized pillows with fringe that make them appear larger, suit a large sofa better than small ones. Place an area rug in front of the sofa that is at least as long as the sofa if there is a wood or tile floor. A patterned rug adds more color and interest against the leather than a solid-colored rug.

    4

Place lamps that are scaled for a large sofa on the tables next to or behind the sofa. Use lamps that are approximately 30 inches tall on tables to create a triangle of light. Use a floor lamp that is 6 feet tall in any area needing light but cannot accommodate a table lamp. Lamps with textures or details that coordinate with the leather color and other fabrics in the room add interest.
