How to Properly Set a Dining Room Table

With the popularity of open-concept homes that boast large living spaces but few walls, the dining room is quickly becoming a dinosaur. Even if your home boasts one, chances are you don't use it often. However, on those occasions when you break out the fancy dishes to host a holiday dinner or throw a dinner party for friends, you will want to do it right. Setting the dining room table is simple, but there are a few guidelines. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Clear the table of all items.

    2

Spread a clean table cloth evenly over the table top. Smooth out any wrinkles with your hand. White linen tablecloths are traditional, but lace and those with patterns are also acceptable.

    3

Place the centerpiece in the exact center of the table.

    4

Center a dinner plate in front of each chair, 1 inch from the table's edge.

    5

Arrange silverware so that the forks are to the left, and the knife and spoons are to the right of the plate. Turn the knife so that the sharp side of the blade is toward the plate. Be sure the flatware is evenly spaced and 1 inch from the table's edge.

    6

Position the bread and butter plate to the upper left of the dinner plate, above the fork. Place the butter knife horizontally across it.

    7

Put the glasses above the knife, with the smaller ones up front.

    8

Fold the napkin into thirds and place it to the side of the forks, or pull it through a napkin ring and place it in the center of the dinner plate.
