Drafting is a type of precise, specialized drawing used by architects and engineers. The main goal of drafting is to help the viewer understand technical information. Unlike ordinary drawing, drafting requires a number of specialized tools. While much modern drafting is done on the computer, basic mechanical drafting tools are still useful for some projects. Learning to use these tools can help drafting students get a better understanding of the drafting process.
Furniture
A drafting table and stool are important for anyone who'll be spending a lot of time drafting. Drafting tables tend to be taller than ordinary tables, and have an adjustable writing surface that works either horizontally or at an angle. Drafting stools allow a comfortable posture when working at the table, and are also adjustable. Good drafting furniture helps prevent muscle cramps and strains when working for long periods.
Pencils
Drafters tend to prefer mechanical pencils or lead holders to wooden pencils. These specialized pencils provide a consistent-width line, allowing for a clearer, easier to read design. Lead holders and mechanical pencils also make it easy to change pencil type. Simply place a harder or softer lead in the pencil to make a different mark.
T-Square
This T-shaped measuring device allows drafters to draw consistently straight lines, and also works to locate reference points. T-squares may be used to guide other tools, such as a lettering guide or affixed triangle, for making a series of parallel vertical or horizontal lines.
Erasing
Specialized erasers are useful for producing a clean final drawing with no stray marks. Drafters often use kneaded erasers, which remove marks without damaging the paper, or white vinyl erasers, which erase more cleanly than conventional pink erasers. Erasing guides allow drafters to clean a very small section of paper without disturbing neighboring pencil lines. A brush is used to remove all eraser crumbs, since oils from the hand may smear the drawing.
