How to Use a Picnic Table as a Dining Room Table

How to Use a Picnic Table as a Dining Room Table

A dining room is a space where family and friends gather to enjoy meals together. As such, the central element in this room is the table. Instead of choosing a predictable table, furnish the space with an unexpected one -- a picnic table. A picnic table sets a welcoming tone and is ideal for use in a rustic-themed dining room. While picnic tables are casual, you can dress them up to give them a bit more of a formal look that is appropriate for a dining room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Purchase a picnic table. There are several styles and types of picnic tables available. Traditionally, they are rectangular tables that are made out of wood and come with attached or detached benches that flank either side. In addition to the traditional style, they can also be circular or round in shape. They can be made of a variety of types of wood, recycled plastic or aluminum. Instead of benches, they can be surrounded with individual chairs. The possible styles and materials are seemingly limitless. When purchasing one for your dining room, consider the look you are trying to achieve, as well as the size of the room. Shop around. Take pictures of different tables you are interested in and compare them before making your final selection.

    2

Set up the picnic table. After purchasing your table, bring it home and set it up in your dining room. Try placing it in different positions until you find one that you are satisfied with.

    3

Purchase accessories. Table runners, centerpieces, chair covers and other decorative elements help to personalize the picnic table and give it a more formal look for a dining room.

    4

Dress the table. After you've purchased your accessories, use them to decorate the table and seats. One idea is to place a sterling silver serving platter topped with pillar candles on top of a cotton or linen runner. If you're using a picnic table that is flanked by wooden benches, place overstuffed cushions on them to not only give them a different look, but to provide diners with comfort.
