A modern form of the metric system, known as the International System of Units, is the predominant method of measurement used throughout the world. The United States is the only industrialized country that has not accepted a form of the metric system as its main means of measurement, instead relying on the United States customary system. Due to increasing globalization and the spread of products and culture, it is important for students to learn about both systems and how to convert between them.
Instructions
- 1
Introduce metric terminology to the students. Begin with grams and kilograms for weight, and centimeters and meters for length. Display the measuring stick and scale, allowing students to visualize these new terms.
2Bring out the metric conversion charts. Point out that the measuring stick and scale display both units, so they can clearly see and compare the numbers. Ask some simple questions, allowing the students to use the conversion charts.
3Repetition aids memorization. Keep asking conversion questions. Take away the conversion chart and ask simple conversion questions. Repeat until the students seem comfortable with conversion.
4Get the students involved. Have them measure and weigh things. Have them describe their day using only metric terms. Once they can understand a metric worldview, they will be able to convert without even thinking about it.
