How to Set the Table for a Family Dinner

How to Set the Table for a Family Dinner

The table setting for a family dinner is typically casual and designed with easy cleanup in mind. In fact, setting the family table is a task that even kids as young as 5 years old can accomplish, according to the Parents magazine website. Teaching your children to set the table properly will give them a sense of accomplishment and give you one less chore to do during hectic mealtimes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Center washable place mats on the table in each family member's space. Use the width and placement of the chair seat as a guide for estimating the size of the space. The bottom edge of the place mat should be even with the edge of the table.

    2

Place the plate in the center of the mat or estimated table space.

    3

Fold a napkin in half and lay it to the left side of the plate so one edge tucks under the plate's lip. Laying the napkin in the center of the plate is also considered good etiquette.

    4

Position the silverware on either side of the plate. Put the fork on the left side of the plate, on top of the napkin if applicable. Place the knife on the right side of the plate with the cutting edge turned toward the plate. Lay the spoon next to the knife.

    5

Center the cup or glass approximately 1 inch above the tip of the knife.
